More than 70 turn out to Clean Up Newington

An enthusiastic group of more than 70 locals turned out on Sunday to help 'Clean Up Newington' as part of the annual Clean Up Australia Day campaign.

The Clean Up brigade rallied in Pierre de Coubertin park where they were decked out with gloves, tongs, sunblock and insect repellent before they set off to work.

"The Clean Up covered the parks and roadways throughout the suburb and Millennium Parklands and our grow collected 116 bags of rubbish," said Newington Neighbourhood Association, Vice President, David Coop. "It was great to see everyone from youngsters to seniors pitch in to help."

After the clean up the volunteers headed back to the park for a free sausage sizzle and to compare notes  on what they picked up from plastic straws and bottles to dumped oil drums. It's the fourth year the Newington Neighbourhood Association has coordinated the effort with support from their sponsors Dooley’s, Newington Tyres and More, Newington Marketplace, Newington Village Real Estate, Crown International Holdings, Dynamic Property Services and Auburn Council.

"We'd like to thank everyone who gave up their Sunday morning to help out including the council's waste collection crew who came around to collect the filled bags," said Mr Coop. " A special thanks to those people who have been coming every year since we started and it was fabulous to see some new faces as well and to welcome some of the residents from Wentworth Point who lent a hand.

"Several of our volunteers said there seemed to be less rubbish than in previous years which is a good sign," he said. "Hopefully that trend continues so Newington can look its best every day of the year."
