Message from the Mayor of Auburn
Council is not against a special event parking scheme in Newngton for the Telstra 500 race. If you look at the council business papers for Wednesday night's meeting, you will see a letter that I wrote to the HMRA (the authority implementng the V8 race).
The main issue for us is that the State Labor Govt. saw NO negatives in having the race and voting for it, despite strong protests from residents and Council. Now I understand that Labor Ministers have promised to look into the parking scheme for the race, and Auburn Council will have to bear the majority of the cost of such a scheme.
If the special event parking is to be implemented for the V8 race, it should be a considered a cost of the overheads for the race, and not passed to Council to implement and pay for. Cost shifting is a major issue for Councils and this, to me, is a clear example of that.
Before Council implements any sort of parking scheme, we will survey ALL affected residents. Please rest assured that I wish to minimise the negative effects of this event on all local residents, and this includes those around Lidcombe railway station who often haave parking issues from those who drive to Lidcombe and use the 'sprint train'.

Irene Simms
